Bath And Basins


Useful hints and tips for baths and basins. See Below:

 


Acrylic or fibreglass

To clean

dishwashing liquid: Rub stains with liquid soap, but do not use abrasives.

sandpaper silver polish: Gently rub stubborn stains with very fine sandpaper. Finish with metal polish. Scratches can be treated with silver metal polish.

To remove grease:
washing soda: Wash down with si warm solution of soda in water.

 


Porcelain or vitreous enamel

To remove soap film

fine steel wool vinegar ammonia

Use steel wool, and wash with vinegar and ammonia in water.

Blue-green drip stains

soap suds ammonia

Rub well, then replace washer so tap does not drip (you'll save water too).
household bleach

Use a solution of bleach and rub well. Rinse thoroughly.

Rust stains:

lemon salt - Dip lemon in salt and scrub to remove stains.

General stains

vinegar or turpentine - Dip a cloth in either and rub stains. Rinse well.

Stubborn stains

cream of tartar hydrogen peroxide - Make a paste with cream of tartar and diluted hydrogen peroxide, with a few drops of ammonia for tough stains. Leave the paste on for 1 or 2 hours. Rinse well.

borax lemon juice -Leave this paste on stains till they disappear. Rinse well.

soap 1/2 cup mineralised met hylated spirits - Grate a bar of household soap into a bucket of hot water. Add spirits and stir till soap is dissolved. Brush stains on porcelain baths with this mixture, then rinse well.

To brighten yellowed porcelain
salt turpentine

Rub with this solution.

To polish

kerosene bicarbonate of soda - Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda onto clean bath and polish with a cloth dipped in kerosene.

paraffin - For a shiny bath or basin, use a cloth dipped in paraffin. The smell does not linger.

nvlon net - Make a pad or pompon of net. Its gentle abrasion will remove bath rings.

fine steel wool - Use with a solution of vinegar, ammonia and water to remove soap film.

Holiday protection
petroleum jelly -Protect bath or basin from drip stains by smearing with petroleum jelly.


In The Bath

Bath sachets

1 tablespoon oatmeal dried herbs or flowers essential oil

orris-root powder (optional) open-weave fabric

Make small drawstring bags and fill with herbs or flowers (try chamomile, rosemary, sage, peppermint, dried lime flowers or pine needles), add oatmeal, a few drops of a fragrant essential oil, and a little orris-root powder from the chemist. Allow hot water to run through bag.

Bath salts

1 kg washing soda crystals essential oil 70 g borax (optional)

Crush crystals lightly, add fragrant oil drop by drop. Borax can be added to soften water. Colour salts with a drop of food colouring or strong tea.

Bath for dry skin
Add 1 teaspoon olive oil

Bath for oily skin

Add 1 teaspoon epsom salts.

Bubble bath

1/2 cup shampoo

1 tablespoon vegetable oil food colour (optional).

Shake together in a screw-top jar. Froth up half the mixture under running water for a good bubble bath.

Bubble blowing mix

1 tablespoon glycerine | 1 tablespoon liquid detergent | pinch sugar

Mix together for tougher bubbles.
