Heathers are one of best and
most reliable plants for winter colour, with many varieties
flowering through the spring too. There is also a range of
summer-flowering types. Heathers requiring similar conditions
can be grown together in a collection or combined with other
plants in a mixed border or even containers. Give heathers
a sunny position and an acid to neutral soil. If your garden
soil is alkaline there are a few types that can tolerate these
conditions too including Erica carnea and E. x darleyensis.
