There are several species of trollius, the globe flower,
in cultivation, all bearing impressive rounded blooms in various
shades of yellow with prominent stamens. They are ideal for
waterside planting or in the border, coming into. flower in
late spring and again in late summer if the stems are cut
right back after flowering.
GROWING Plant out in autumn or spring in rather heavy,
moisture-retentive soil. Keep well-watered, especially in
hot-dry spells. Some shade is tolerated.
PROPAGATION Divide the fibrous rootstock in autumn
and replant immediately.
SPECIES Trollius ledebourii (above), bright, orange-yellow,
cup-shaped flowers; T. x cultorum, garden hybrid, only 30-45cm/12-18in
high. Good varieties are `Earliest of All', clear yellow;
`Salamander', reddish orange; `Canary Bird', pale yellow.
POSSIBLE PROBLEMS Smut causes swellings on leaves
and stems.
