Household Hints and Tips - Showers

Shower Curtains


Shower curtains:

To clean

salt lemon juice

Make a paste and rub well into soap scum, then rinse in warm water.


Plastic shower curtains

Do not rub, squeeze or wring plastic or rubberised shower curtains.


To clean

methylated spirits hot water

Wring out a cloth in hot water, dip in methylated spirits and wipe the soap
scum off the curtain.


1/2 cup bleach 1 bucket water

Wash down curtains with solution. Rinse.


borax

Wet curtain and rub powdered borax into soiled areas. The soapy film will come away easily.


ammonia

Wash curtains in water to which a spoonful of ammonia has been added. It will dissolve soap scum and stains. Rinse in water to which a little mineral oil has been added: it will soften the curtains.


To remove mildew

bicarbonate of soda or bleach
Use a mild solution of bleach and water, or make a paste with bicarbonate of soda. Rinse, then rinse again in salt water before hanging to prevent mildew returning.


Nylon shower curtains

To remove mildew

5 L cold water - 1/2 cup bleach - 1 tablespoon vinegar
Soak in this solution till mildew disappears.

To clean
white vinegar
Sponge doors with vinegar.

 


Shower Recess

To clean
water

Turn on the hot water and rinse off loose dirt in the shower recess before you clean.


1 handful washing soda 1/2 bucket water

Wear rubber gloves. Dissolve the washing soda in hot water, then scrub tiles with a long-handled brush. Rinse thoroughly.


bicarbonate of soda bleach

Make a paste and scrub stains. Rinse well.


To remove hard water deposits

vinegar

Apply neat to tiles or shower recess and leave for 10 minutes. Rinse.


Shower recess, moulded

kerosene brown vinegar

Mix in equal parts and wash down recess. Do not use abrasives.

 


Shower Rose

 

To clean


vinegar

Remove the head. Soak plastic heads in equal parts of hot vinegar and water.

Boil metal heads for 10 to 20 minutes in 1/2 cup of vinegar and 2 L water.
