Quick Guide: summer, half hardy, full

Lobularia maritima is a close relative of alyssum, which
it closely resembles, bearing masses of tiny sweetly scented
flowers. This dwarf plant is often used in summer bedding
schemes, window boxes and hanging baskets, in company with
lobelia. It is also suitable for rock gardens and will grow
in the crevices of paving or as an edging.
PROPAGATION Sow seeds under glass in early spring.
prick out young plants and harden off before planting out
in early summer. If sowing outdoors where the plants are to
grow, wait until late spring and thin seedlings to 15cm/6in
intervals when they are large enough to handle. Garden plants
sometimes selfseed.
GROWING Remove dead flowers regularly with sharp scissors
and flowering will continue for 2-4 months.
VARIETIES Choose named varieties such as `Rosie O'Day',
rose-pink; 'Little Dorrit', white, also known as `Little Gem';
`Lilac Queen' and `Violet Queen'.
POSSIBLE PROBLEMS Generally trouble-free.
