Home designs inspired by movies

The television has become one of the first places that many people look for design ideas for their home and with a range of great shows for inspiration there is sure to be something out there that will suit everyone.

Pinpointing trends

Some shows have a great budget for their sets so if they are creating a home for one of their characters it is often grander than anything most of us can dream of, but it is possible to take inspiration from the colour trends and furniture design. Of course, this depends upon looking at the latest shows; the revamped Dallas, for example, showcases luxury interiors that are a vast
improvement on those from the original 1980s series. Other popular shows at the moment include The Good Wife, which is great inspiration for those who are interested in creating the look of a stylish apartment.

Sex and the City is a show that still inspires those who are interested in apartment living. The Manhattan-based characters lived a luxurious lifestyle. The apartment occupied by Carrie showed how a small space could be functional while other characters occupied larger spaces and opted for features such as hardwood floors and shutters, both good investments for any home.

Classic inspiration

It is also a good idea to turn to classic movies for those who want a timeless feel to their interior designs. Sleepless in Seattle aimed to create a timeless feel in every aspect of its design from the interiors to hairstyles. The home occupied by Meg Ryan’s character has a vintage feel to it with floral and pastel colours, which is still a very popular trend at the moment, yet the film is now 20 years old. The film You’ve Got Mail, made a few years later but with the same stars created a New York apartment that was reminiscent of years gone by.

Finding vintage or timeless pieces with which to decorate the home is not very difficult. A quick tour of second-hand shops is a good idea and there are some replica ranges available in the shops. Consider features such as shutters, which are a classic feature that is easily installed in the home. Inspiring pictures of blinds and shutters can be found online and will help to determine which is the right look for each room. Think about flooring – hardwood floors need updating far less often than carpets and they will add an elegant touch to any style of décor.

When it comes to colour schemes it is a good idea to keep it as neutral as possible for a classic look, adding splashes of colour with accessories such as throws and cushions. Rugs may be needed in some rooms where there are hardwood floors and these can also be used to add colour.
