Quick Guide: summer, hardy, full sun, height: 10-90cm/4-36in, width: 23-45cm/9-18in

Commonly known as snapdragon, Antirrhinum majus is a perennial usually treated as an annual, although in very favoured areas it may survive the winter. Modern varieties are available in all colours except blue, and the profuse tubular flowers look stunning in a summer border. They also make good cut flowers.

PROPAGATION Sow seeds in very early spring indoors with gentle heat. Prick the seedlings out into boxes when they are large enough to handle and harden off before planting out in late spring. Alternatively raise plants during the summer in a cold frame for planting out the following year.

GROWING A well-drained soil, previously enriched with well rotted compost, is best. Pinch out growing tips to encourage bushy growth, unless single stems are required for cutting. Dead-head regularly.

VARIETIES Always choose rust-resistant varieties from the following divisions. `Maximum', up to 90cm/3ft, many colours - the Rocket group is a vigorous strain; `Nanum', up to 45cm/18in - `Cheerio' is a sturdy hybrid; `Pumilum', dwarfs at 15cm/6in. `Tom Thumb Mixed' and `Pixie' are reliable types which may also be grown in the rock garden.

POSSIBLE PROBLEMS Rust is the major problem. Aphids may damage young shoots.
