Quick Guide: non-flowering, hardy, full sun, height: 7.5m/25ft, width: 2.5m/8ft

In natural conditions the Colorado spruce, Picea pungens, reaches 30cm/100ft, but numerous smaller forms of this beautiful tree have been raised for garden cultivation. Generally conical in shape, the trees bear stiff needles that are very pale blue/grey when young. After about 20 years cylindrical cones 7.5cm/3in long are produced.

GROWING Plant from autumn to spring on deep, moisture retentive, slightly acid soil. Choose a sheltered position as young trees are vulnerable to damage by frost. Sprinkle a general purpose fertiliser around the rooting area each spring. Pruning is not necessary.

PROPAGATION Sow seed in spring in boxes of compost in a cold frame. Place in nursery rows the following spring and grow on for 2-3 years before transferring to permanent positions.

VARIETIES 'Glauca', beautiful blue-green needles; 'Glauca Pendula', only 3 x 3m/10 x 10ft, a weeping form; `Argentea', silver needles; `Viridis', light green.

POSSIBLE PROBLEMS Green spruce aphids.
