Benson Design specialises in high-quality leather rugs and floors made by British craftsmen to their original designs. Using an idea that has existed for centuries, but seldom exploited as a design concept,Benson offer a range of ready-made rugs in classical and contemporary designs and tailor-made flooring.
Their leather is of saddle-quality and the cowhides are carefully selected for interesting grain and “character”. bensons only use leather that has been tanned by traditional methods (with leaves, twigs and tree bark) rather than by modern chrome tanning. The tanneries in Great Britain from which Benson source most of the hides are renowned for their traditional oak-bark and vegetable tanning methods. Vegetable-tanned leather has a more pleasing natural appearance and over time acquires a patina like that of old leather-bound books.
The hides Benson use for flooring are specially treated for greater strength and resilience. The leather, from bend and shoulder sections, is carefully selected for interesting growth pattern and optimum thickness – depending on the function of the room. For example, a dressing room can be laid with softer leather whilst a more robust quality is advisable for reception areas.
