Painting the exterior of your home. Preparing your painting project

Follow these simple steps to ensure the outside of your house looks great for longer and remains protected against the elements.

Preparation for exterior walls, wood or metal.

For walls:

  • Fill any water trips using the appropriate filler
  • Kill any algae or fungal growth with a multi surface fungicide wash
  • Stabalise and seal loose, powdery surfaces with exterior stabilising primor.

For metal:

  • Apply the suitable metal primer to inhibit rust and provide a foundation for painting.

For wood:

  • Prime bare wood with exterior preservative primer to protect it from rot.
  • Apply exterior undercoat to build up uneven surfaces and give better opacity for the topcoat.

Choose your finish:

For walls:

  • For a smooth finish use smoothe exterior masonry paint.
  • For a textured finish to mask, uneven surfaces, use textured exterior masonry paint.

For metal and wood:

  • To achieve a modern, subtle-sheen finish, choose quick drying exterior satin.
  • For a high-sheen finish use an exterior gloss.
  • Existing paintwork can be renewed with exterior one coat gloss.

Not sure what colour? Get a good feel for your colour by using a masonry tester. Available from leading brands in smooth and textured finishes.

Getting Started

Always start painting at the top and work down. Paint your walls first, then windows and doors. This is where you can use colours to give a great style to your house.
