Quick Guide: summer, tender, full sun, height: 3m/10ft,
width: 4.5cm/18in
Native to South Africa, Thunbergia alata or black-eyed susan
is a twining perennial grown as an annual in less favoured
climates. It bears numerous funnel-shaped flowers of deep
yellow with a black centre. Black-eyed susan can be grown
on a sunny patio in a large pot, trained up a wigwam of canes
which it will quickly obscure.
GROWING A position in full sun is essential, with
fertile, moist soil. Plant against a wall, fence or post with
the support of strings, wires or netting. Water in dry spells
and discard after flowering.
PROPAGATION Sow seeds under glass in spring in small
individual pots. Harden off and do not plant out until night
temperatures exceed 10°C/50°F.
VARIETIES `Susie', hardier than the species, profusion
of yellow, orange
and white flowers; `Alba', white with black eye.
POSSIBLE PROBLEMS Generally trouble-free.
