The Heat is On!

With British summers proving to be a damp squib, you might want to look at installing a heat pump to your swimming pool. Not only will you be saving on your monthly running costs as heat pumps are more energy efficient, you will also reduce carbon emissions thereby reducing the impact on the environment.

Compared with other energy sources heat pumps could save you up to 70% against natural gas, up to 80% against propane gas and up to a massive 600% against electrical resistance heaters.

Heat pumps work similar to a refrigeration unit in that the evaporator absorbs heat from the ambient air via the fan which is then transferred to the refrigerant flowing through the evaporator coil. The compressor takes up the warmed refrigerant, heats it and the hot refrigerant, now converted to gas, is then pumped to the condenser.

The heat from the hot refrigerant inside the condenser is transferred to the pool water via the heat exchanger, heating the water but cooling the refrigerant at the same time. The refrigerant cools down sufficiently to start the whole process again.

Sounds expensive? The beauty of this process is that a swimming pool heat pump actually only requires enough electrical energy to operate the compressor and the fan motor. Most cost-efficient heat pumps available can produce many times more heat energy than the electrical power it needs to work. kW’s used would vary on the model chosen but an average example would be: for every 1-kW of electricity consumed, the heat pump can generate over 5-kW of heat production into the swimming pool water. Maximum benefit for minimum cost!

Most high-quality heat pumps are fitted with titanium heat exchangers thereby making them compatible with standard or salt chlorinated pools.

The required elements needed to run a heat pump are: mains electricity, sufficient airflow and adequate ventilation.
When selecting a particular model, bear in mind:

- Surface area of the pool
- Preferred water temperature
- Swimming season
- Length of time pool cover is removed

A reputable dealer should be able to accurately recommend the type of heat pump to suit your requirements. Most self-respecting dealers should offer you a minimum of 2 years parts and labour warranty so you have peace of mind on purchase.

Why not take the plunge and prolong your swimming season by installing a heat pump? You know it makes sense.
