The
range of available tools is vast. A good starting point is
to put together the basic tools needed for home DIY projects.
Start with twelve core items and then add as your enthusiasm
- and skill - at home maintenance grows
Screwdrivers
There are two types of screwdriver which both come in various
sizes, to fit large and small screws. A screwdriver set, with
one handle and a selection of heads, means you can find a
match for every screw. Alternatively, start off with a medium-sized
screwdriver and a much smaller one-these should cope with
most jobs.
Standard screwdriver (also known as a flat-head screwdriver)
This type of screwdriver is used with screws that have one
straight slot. These screwdrivers can be used for tightening
wall sockets, constructing some types of furniture, replacing
door hinges, and for most jobs around the house.
Phillips Screwdriver (cross-head)
This kind of screwdriver is used as a standard, but with screws
that have a cross shape in their heads.
Hammer
This can be made entirelv of steel, or have a steel tip on
a wood handle. Swing the hammer in the shop to check its weight
it should not be too heavy, and should have the correct width
for a good grip. A double-headed hammer has a claw end that
can be used for removing nails.
Sandpaper (glass paper)
Sandpaper is sold in varying weights - fine, medium and coarse
- but is cheap enough to buy in a mixed packet. Use it to
smooth surface irregularities and scratches in wood and plaster.
It also roughens smooth surfaces to prepare them to grip fresh
paint.
Cross-cut saw
This long, graduated saw will cut through planks of wood and
composite boards, from floorboards to beading strips.
Pliers
Pliers are used to cut, bend, or stretch wire. They are also
good for holding nuts in place when tightening bolts -with
a -wrench.
Retractable knife /Stanley knife
A retractable knife is a safe wav to cut tough materials
with accuracy. The blades are replaceable and can be withdrawn
into the case for safety.
Hacksaw
This thin blade cuts through metal and plastics easily and
safely.
Spirit level
A level provides a true horizontal and vertical line, thus
ensuring perfect results for all DIY projects that rely on
a level surface. This tool is essential for marking straight
shelves and wallpaper borders.
Tape measure
A retractable measuring tape can be used for general measuring,
and is essential for measuring large areas (such as room widths).
Some have a spirit level fitted.
Adjustable wrench
This type of wrench has a roller ball that adjusts the head
to fit around most nuts. It is essential for tightening loose
joints and connectors in plumbing, though you still might
need a small wrench for delicate jobs.
Bradawl
This pointed hand tool makes small starter holes in walls
and woodwork. These holes serve as a guide for nails and screws,
making the job more accurate. They also make the job safer
- an electric drill is less likely to slip when the fixing
point is already started.
Oil
Oil lubricates moving parts, and oiling cures squeaks, and
ensures the smooth movement of metal parts.
